The Great Wall of India – Anshuman Gaekwad

We have heard about Rahul Dravid being one of the most patient batsmen in Indian cricket. But years before Dravid made his debut in the international arena, Anshuman Gaekwad used to be the defensive
stroke maker of the Indian batting line up. He was known for his defensive technique which proved to be a great weapon against the mighty fast bowlers of that time.

He made his Test debut against the West Indies at Kolkata on 27 December 1974. Gaekwad scored 1985 runs from 40 Tests at an average of 30.07 with 2 centuries and 10 half centuries to his credit. He scored his highest Test score of 201 against Pakistan at Jalandhar in 1982–83. This innings, where he spent 671 minutes, is an example for his patient style and concentration.
He was a brutal player in First-class cricket as he scored massive 12136 runs in 206 matches he played. He averaged more than 40 in First-class cricket and scored 34 hundreds including the best score of 225 to his name.
He also used to bowl right-arm off-break and had 143 wickets to his tally.

Anshuman Gaekwad worked for GSFC (Vadodara) after retiring from Cricket and took early retirement in 2000. He is currently based in Vadodara, Gujarat, India
